The Innovator Visa is designed for entrepreneurs looking to establish or run a business in the UK. To qualify, you must have a scalable business idea endorsed by an approved body. Your business can operate in any sector as long as it is innovative and commercially viable.
Key requirements include:
✅ A minimum of £50,000 available to invest (or already invested) in your UK business
✅ Endorsement from an authorised UK endorsing body
✅ Full commitment to developing your business while in the UK
✅ English language proficiency
The Innovator Visa is valid for up to 3 years, with a pathway to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK. In some cases, you can bring your partner and children, provided you have sufficient financial resources.
Applying for an Innovator Visa involves meeting specific financial and business-related requirements, including:
✔️ Proof of at least £50,000 investment funds
✔️ A recent endorsement letter (issued within 3 months before applying)
✔️ Dedication to spending your entire working time on business development in the UK
✔️ English language proficiency
Since each case is unique, we recommend speaking to an immigration solicitor for expert guidance tailored to your circumstances.
To qualify for an Innovator Visa, your business must be assessed and approved by an endorsing body based on the following:
🔹 Innovation – Your idea must be original, addressing a market need or creating a competitive advantage.
🔹 Viability – You must demonstrate the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to run the business successfully.
🔹 Scalability – Your business should have potential for growth, job creation, and long-term sustainability.
Once endorsed, you must remain in contact with your endorsing body and attend regular review checkpoints at 6, 12, and 24 months. Innovator Visa holders cannot undertake employment outside their business venture.
The initial visa is valid for 3 years, with the option to extend indefinitely in 3-year increments, subject to re-endorsement. After 3 years, you may be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
To qualify for ILR after holding an Innovator Visa for 3 years, you must meet at least two of the following requirements:
✅ Invested and utilised at least £50,000 towards the business plan
✅ Created at least 5 full-time jobs for UK resident workers, each paying £25,000+ per year
✅ Created at least 10 full-time jobs for UK resident workers (no salary requirement)
✅ Doubled the number of customers in 3 years and outperformed industry competitors
✅ Engaged in significant R&D and applied for intellectual property protection in the UK
✅ Achieved an annual gross revenue of at least £1 million
✅ Achieved an annual gross revenue of £500,000, with at least £100,000 from exports
Additionally, you must pass a Life in the UK Test, demonstrate English language proficiency, and prove continuous residence in the UK, with no more than 180 days spent outside the UK in any 12-month period.
