The UK’s Graduate Visa route — designed to let international students stay and work after completing their studies — is undergoing significant reform. Starting 1 January 2027, the standard post-study work period will be reduced from two years to 18 months. However, PhD graduates will continue to enjoy a three-year stay.
What This Means for Graduates
Students completing eligible UK degrees will still have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience, switch to another visa, or secure sponsorship. However, with the shorter duration, planning ahead will become more important than ever.
Employers may also become more selective when hiring under this route, preferring graduates who show long-term commitment and the potential to transition into skilled roles.
Why It’s Important
This reform reflects the UK Government’s ongoing focus on attracting talent that contributes meaningfully to the economy while maintaining a balanced immigration system. It’s a reminder that international graduates who intend to build long-term careers in the UK should start exploring alternative visa options — such as the Skilled Worker Visa or Innovator Founder Visa — as early as possible.
