Life in the UK and English Test Guidance
For most applicants seeking ILR or British citizenship, the Home Office requires proof that you can integrate into UK society. This is assessed through the Life in the UK Test and the English Language Requirement.
Who Needs to Take Them?
- Applicants for ILR under the 5-year or 10-year route.
- Applicants for British citizenship (naturalisation).
- Unless exempt due to age (under 18 or over 65) or medical reasons.
A multiple-choice exam assessing knowledge of British history, traditions, culture, and daily life. Passing it is required for settlement and citizenship.
You must prove your English ability through an approved test (at B1 level or higher), or by holding an accepted qualification or nationality from an English-speaking country.
