Settled and Pre Settled Status for EU Citizens

UK will be leaving from the EU. To protect the rights of EU citizens, the UK government has announced two types of settlement scheme for EU citizens. You can either get a settled or pre-settled status depending on the length of your stay in the UK. Of course, this will not affect your life or rights in the UK.

1.ELIGIBILITY

EU citizens who have come to the UK before 31 December 2020 provided that the UK leaves the EU without a deal and 30 July 2021 provided that the UK leaves the EU without a deal, can apply for pre-settled or settled status. Provided that they have lived in the UK, Northern Island, Channel Islands and Isle of Man for ongoing 5 years, you can apply for settled status. You can still benefit from the rights since they will stay the same. Had you not lived in the UK without a valid reason, then you might be qualified for pre-settled status. Your rights, in this case, will stay the same as well.

2.What are the Valid Reasons?

Provided that you:

• Have children who are born abroad
• Suffer from critical illness
• Professional training
• Study
• These exceptions are valid up to 12 consecutive months.

Provided that you:

• Stay abroad for mandatory military service
• Go abroad as a servant of the Crown or a servant of a family member of the Crown
• These exceptions are not limited by time.
